caring for animals - an organisation in the right spirit

Author: s. balasubramanian

to take care of and to address the plight of animals which suffer, there is an establishment called born free foundation.  it is in line with or similar to the people for ethical treatment of animals (peta).  born free is based in the united kingdom.

it watches the conditions of all animals which are lodged in zoo, etc., all over the world.  if the shelter facility, food arrangement, etc. are not good or conducive to the health of the concerned animal, the foundation raises its head and pokes its nose on the matter and also represent the case to the authorities concerned.

the way of approach by born free, is very polite and gentle.  it never misuses its power/position/capacity.  it always requests the higher-ups to look into the problem and do the needful, so as to redress the grievance of the unfortunate animals.

it is co-ordinated by madam tricia holford, whose mail id is: tricia@bornfree.org.uk.  it sends a newsletter/bulletin, by name 'activate' to the members.  membership is quite free of cost.  any interested person can become a member.  there is no rigid rule.  the idea is to spread the message all over the world.

just like peta, born free follows the path of non-violence.  only through letters, e-mails, correspondence, leaflets, etc., it opposes the treatment given by the narrous-minded persons to animals.  it asks the members to communicate directly to the persons who are in power.  in that case also, it pleads for extreme and utmost politeness, softness and patience, in our mail to the governing authorities.  it publishes the photos of the suffering animals as a proof of their cause and thus projects its case to the world community.

the mailing address of it is given below: born free foundation, 3, grove house, foundry lane, horsham, west sussex rh 13 5 pl, uk.  landline phone number is : 01403 240170 ; mail id is : info@bornfree.org.uk.  their web address is :-www.bornfree.org.uk.

through their polite, submissive but firm campaign and creative awareness in the minds of persons at the helm of affairs, they promote their cause.

for instance, according to the version given by mr. daniel turner, born free's senior operations officer - europe, zoo check, susi is a thirty-six year old african elephant in barcelona zoo in spain.  she now lives in the city centre zoo in a concrete and earth yard measuring just 1017 m 2.

besides leading life in a barren concrete enclosure, she is straining to reach the greenery, outside her shelter.  this is the pathetic condition of the poor elephant.  also, her companion, alicia, died in february, 2008.  one can understand the fact that those under-privileged animals are just passing their lives withstanding all hardships and miseries.  there is no body to care for them and to come to their rescue or succour.

as the whole world is after money, material pleasures and wealth, there is little chance for the human beings to worry about the animal community.  the reason is quite obvious.  there is no return or benefit, especially monetary gain, by protecting or safeguarding or feeding the cursed animals.  it is human nature.

in this era of online lottery and casino, where is the time for human beings to take care of or help elephants and other animals?  it is their bane or fate.

as such born free plays a major role in alleviating/minimising the sufferings/miseries of the animals including bear cub and monkey.  the foundation dedicated itself to the sacred cause of animal welfare/well-being.  if we want, we may request all printed (campaign) materials from them.  they are ready to send them to any part of the globe.  it is not a commercial or business organisation, but a service-oriented and philanthrophic one.

its letters (to members) are pinted on recycled paper.  it requests the members to send a carbon copy to them, when sending mail to the conerned authorities.  alike rotary international's motto/theme of 'service above self', its very existence is aimed at selfless service.  even the newsletter 'activate' has animal emblem inscribed / printed on the top right hand corner.  animal welfare is their bible and it is their memorandum and articles of association too.

madam virginia mc kenna is the founder of born free.  it celebrated its silver jubilee (25th anniversary) in march (this year).  actually the death of an elephant, viz., pole pole, in london zoo, laid the basis and created the rationale for its formation.  after the tragic incident, london zoo has no longer elephants.

it is relevant to mention here that madam tricia also completed twenty five (25) years of tireless in born free.  further, it is  a happy news that the dallas (in u.s.) city councillors have agreed to spend or invest on  a five-six acre elephant enclosure instead of rehoming jenny, the elephant who has lived in a quarter (1/4) acre antiquated enclosure in dallas zoo for the last twenty two (22) years, to a 300 acre habitat at the elephant sanctuary in tennessee which is also in u.s.  such is the poor state of animals whose plight is unmeasurable.

unless and otherwise we, the human beings, give a helping hand to them, they have to suffer on the earth until they breathe their last.

we cannot always depend on government to set right things.  just like born free, private organisations/ agencies must come forward to address the issues like this and also to take/bring them to the eyes/notice of the world (apart from the attention of the governments in place).

readers and like-minded/generous-hearted persons may support born free financially.  of coursetax exemption may be claimed by their monetary contribution to the foundation, as donation.  there is no bar or hindrance in associating ourselves with born free.  it is purely voluntary and there is no string attached to it.

if we are fully/thoroughly convinced of the yeoman service rendered by the foundation, we may join hands with them.  at the maximum, we will have to send e-mail / post (printed) letters to the appropriate authorities, that is all.  we have nothing to lose, but we utilise our time and effort for amost sacred and deserving casue.

'activate' will activate all of us.  each and every one of their communcation to us, will be friendly and courteous.

hence let us identity the needs of born free and extend / say a warm 'hello' to them, by joining their crusade.  let us all unite to put a full-stop to the miseries which are experienced by the animals and also extend a helping hand to uplift them.  let us make a silent revolution on the subject.  being matured and educated human beings, it is our duty to preserve, protect and nurture them in all possible ways.  let us show our strength on this count.  may god bless all of us, in our mission.
